SHELBY — After building a six-point lead at halftime, the Shelby boys basketball team held off Newaygo for a 46-40 victory Monday night at home in non-conference game.

 
It was the third straight win for the Tigers, which also snapped the Lions’ four-game winning streak. Shelby began the season 0-5.
 
The game was close all the way, with four lead changes, but only two ties. Shelby’s largest lead was eight points, while the Lions led by as many as five.
 
A 16-10 first quarter proved to be decisive for the Tigers, as the two teams scored evenly over the last three quarters. Both teams scored 12 points in the second period as the Tigers carried a 28-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
Each team scored nine points in the third and fourth quarters, but with the Tigers were able to maintain that six-point margin thanks to that first quarter.

Bishop Lee was the scorer big for the Tigers with 23 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field. Mason Garcia contributed seven points and Wyatt Dickman six.
 
Lee also led the Tigers on the boards with eight rebounds, while Carson Claeys and Dickman had five apiece. Claeys and Garcia dished out three assists each and Lee had two. Dickman picked off five steals and Claeys two.
 
Bryce Decker was Newaygo’s leading scorer with 11 points. Logan Klomp added 10. Grant Harkness had seven rebounds.
 
The Tigers (3-5) resume West Michigan Conference Rivers Division play on Thursday when they host Holton.
 
Newaygo (5-4) will host Morley Stanwood on Friday night in the Central State Activities Association.
