WHITEHALL–The Whitehall Vikings girls basketball team cruised to a 52-28 win over the North Muskegon Norsemen on Saturday afternon in a contest played at Whitehall.
 
Onnyka Dempsey from Whitehall burned the North Muskegon defense for a game high 19 points, while hitting five shots from beyond the arc. Her teammate Hailey Carnes also finished in double digits with 10 points. She hit two 3-pointers.
 
Whitehall jumped out to a 13-7 lead after the first eight minutes of action. The Vikings extended their lead to 26-11 by the halftime break when they outscored the Norse 13-4 during the second stanza.
 
Whitehall continued to increase their lead in the third quarter as they held the upper hand 11-8 to take a 37-19 lead into the fourth quarter. 
 
The Vikings secured the win with a 14-9 scoring advantage in the final eight minutes.
 
“We struggled with their press when we tried to dribble through it (18 turnovers), but also had a number of times when we saw opportunities for breaks,” said North Muskegon head coach Sarah Knuth.
 
Kaylee Martin led the North Muskegon offense with eight points and three assists. Grace Philpot chipped in with six points. Francine Vinson grabbed six rebounds while Lucy Fricke hauled down five rebounds.
 
Whitehall (6-5, 2-4) will travel to Western Michigan Christian on Tuesday evening.
 
North Muskegon (3-9, 2-4) will travel to Mason County Central on Tuesday.
