BIG RAPIDS–The Kent City Eagles boys’ basketball team came into Tuesday nights’ Central State Activities Association looking to knock off the league leaders.

An offensive barrage by the Big Rapids Cardinals in the second quarter was something that Kent City couldn’t handle in a 66-54 loss.

The Eagles got off to a great start by racing out to 19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Big Rapids kicked its offense into high gear during the second quarter. They hit 9-of-10 free throws in the period and racked up a 31-7 scoring advantage to take a 40-26 halftime lead.

“Not much you can do when a team shoots like that,” said Kent City coach David Ingles. “I thought we played decent because we were still in the game after that barrage.”

The Cardinals maintained the lead throughout the second half as they held a 14-13 scoring edge in the third period and headed into the fourth quarter with a 54-39 lead.

Kent City finished the fourth quarter with the upper hand, 15-12.

Seth Vanderwest led Kent City with 18 points and Jaret Jaramillo had 17 points.
