MUSKEGON–The Muskegon Community College Lady Jayhawks played their first conference game of the season Saturday afternoon and came away with a convincing 65-29 win over the Alpena Community College Lumberjacks in a Michigan Community College Athletic Association contest.

The Jayhawks took advantage of their ability to run the court and pressure defense.

MCC got out to a 15-11 lead after the first ten minutes of action and extended that lead to nineteen by the halftime break, 32-13 outscoring Alpena 17-2 in the second stanza.

The Jayhawks continued to increase their lead throughout the second half having scoring advantages of 18-12 in the third period and 15-4 in the fourth quarter.

“It was a good team win today. The team really played with intensity and purpose,” said Jayhawks head coach Jason Cooper.

Calla Miller led the Jayhawks offense with 21 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Kendall Zoulek tossed in 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Haley Zerlaut chipped in with 11 points. 

Other contributors for the Jayhawks included Kayla Fisk with six points, six rebounds and four assists and Karleigh Jeffries with six points and seven rebounds. Ashley Richmond had three points and four rebounds.

The Jayhawks (10-4, 1-0) are now on a five game winning streak going into next week’s conference matchups on the road with Delta college on Wednesday and traveling up to Escanaba on Saturday to play against Bay College.
