Muskegon shoots down Reeths-Puffer in girls hoops

MUSKEGON — The Muskegon Big Reds began the OK-Green portion of their schedule with a 57-44 victory over crosstown rival Reeths-Puffer.

Muskegon led 9-8 after one quarter and extended it to 22-14 at the half. The Big Reds had a strong third quarter and outscored the Rockets 17-10 to take a 39-24 lead into the final quarter.

Sophia Hekkema led the Rockets with 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Brooklyn Tornes added 12 points. Arial Walker chipped in eight points and Irelyn Niklasch had seven rebounds.

Muskegon (3-4, 1-0) will travel to Zeeland East on Tuesday.

Reeths-Puffer (3-5, 0-1) hosts Grand Rapids Union on Tuesday.
