RAVENNA–The Ravenna Bulldogs girls basketball team pulled the air out of the ball on Thursday night and ended up with a 32-26 non-conference win over the Fremont Packers.
Neither team generated much offense during the opening eight minutes of action as Ravenna and Fremont ended the first quarter in a 5-5 tie.
The Bulldogs and Packers found some offense during the second stanza as Ravenna outscored Fremont 11-8 in the quarter to take a 16-13 halftime lead.
Ravenna spent part of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter in a four corner offense that burned up a lot of time and kept the ball out of the hands of the Fremont offense.
The Bulldogs led 25-20 after three quarters and secured the six point win in the final eight minutes.
“We got a lot of good shots tonight, they just didn’t fall,” said Fremont head coach Wes Zerlaut. “Credit Ravenna with going to the four corners and taking a lot of time off the clock. Our girls worked hard on defense against that, and got some steals, but they didn’t turn into points often enough and they were able to whittle the clock away.”
Emily Postema led the Ravenna offense with nine points while Emma Gillard tossed in eight points.
Fremont was led by Jessica Bennett with 10 points and Khaila Noordyk with 8 points.
Ravenna (4-6, 2-4) will travel to Holton next Tuesday evening.
Fremont (4-10, 2-4) will host Ludington next Tuesday evening.
What is being taught at practice? Not shooting… when it’s been rumored now that more than a few games they had over 50 MISSED shots. Not defense… when there’s a good sized gap between player and opponent.. leaving opponents wide open to be able to pass or make their shots with ease.
It isn’t for a lack of effort from the girls. “Most” of what they know is from being taught. Which if using the same favorites, dramatics to attain a foul when it is more embarrassing than helpful.. predictably dribbling into the corner nearly every offensive play.. and with no proper bench utilization is to your liking then please continue this charade. It’s been doing great so far.. right?
It’s upsetting to see some of the girls’ hard work and visible effort fall short, game after game after game. Something NEEDS to change if they want any sort of a better record moving forward.
