REED CITY–The Newaygo girls basketball teams have dominated the Reed City Coyote teams in the past number of years.

That wasn’t the case on Tuesday evening as the Lions fell to Reed City, 46-29, in a Central State Activities Association contest.

The Coyotes used a strong first-half performance, along with balanced scoring, to force Newaygo into a deficit they couldn’t recover from.

Reed City jumped out to a 13-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 24-8 by the halftime with a 11-4 scoring edge in the second quarter.

The Newaygo offense came to life in the third period and outscored Reed City 13-8. The Coyotes held the upper hand during the final eight minutes, 11-8.

Molley Bowman led Reed City with a game-high 19 points, including four shots from beyond the arc. Kyleigh Weck tossed in 11 points while Carly Carlson chipped in nine points.

Maria Riddering led the Lions with six points, three steals and three rebounds.  Barbara Toth chipped in six points.  Grace Painter and Naomi Schillman added five points apiece.

“The girls picked up the energy and the effort in the second half tonight, but we just couldn’t make up for the first half performance,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma.  “We just didn’t shoot the ball well enough to catch back up to Reed City.  I got to give them credit.  They hit some shots tonight and came ready to play.”

Newaygo (4-10, 2-5) will host Whitehall next Monday.
