NEWAYGO–The Newaygo Lions girls basketball team dropped a 63-33 Central State Activities Association contest to the Morley-Stanwood Mohawks on Friday.

The Mohawks held a 16-15 lead after the first eight minutes of play and extended their lead to 30-23 by the half.

Morley-Stanwood broke the game open with a 17-7 scoring advantage in the third period and coasted to the victory.

“Good effort from the girls tonight,” Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma said. “I thought we played a pretty good first half against a good Morley Stanwood team. In the second half, we just gave up too many rebounds and Morley took advantage of that.”

Maria Riddering led Newaygo with eight points, four rebounds and three steals.  Amaya Lathrop, Kija Westbrook and Addison Goodin each chipped in six points.  Grace Painter had three points and nine rebounds.

Newaygo (2-8, 1-4) will host Orchard View on Monday.
