ZEELAND–Jaxson Whitaker scored 21 points and Travis Ambrose scored 19 points to lead the Rockets boys’ basketball team to a 50-42 OK-Green win over the Zeeland East Chix on Tuesday evening.

Whitaker, a junior, finished with a team-leading eight rebounds while Ambrose, also a junior, grabbed seven boards.

Reeths-Puffer held a slim one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 14-13.

Neither team generated much offense during the second stanza which saw Zeeland East hold a 6-4 scoring advantage. The Chix held a 19-18 lead at the halftime break.

The Rockets moved ahead by the end of the third period by outscoring Zeeland East 15-10 in the quarter to take a 33-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Reeths-Puffer secured the win with a 17-13 scoring margin during the final eight minutes.

“On a night when we missed a lot of shots that we would normally make, defense saved us,” Reeths-Puffer coach Nathan Aardema said. “It was a good win on the road in OK Green play.”

Sophomore BJ Walker led Zeeland East with 25 points while Layne Risdon chipped in 12 points.
 
Reeths-Puffer (5-4, 2-2) will host Zeeland West on Friday.
