NEWAYGO–The Whitehall Vikings girls basketball team turned up the defense on Monday night and took down Newaygo, 28-21.

The non-conference game was played at Newaygo.

Newaygo had control of the game in the first half as they led a 15-10 lead at the halft and held a 21-17 lead going into the fourth quarter. That’s when the Whitehall defense took over.

The Vikings shutout Newaygo 11-0 in the final eight minutes to secure the victory.

“The girls played hard and got in the right spots for the most part, but we just didn’t shoot the ball well at all tonight,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “We had opportunities to make some shots, but they just didn’t fall and you can’t do that against a team like Whitehall which plays pretty good defense.”

Ashley Tenbrink led Whitehall with nine points and Lola Buckner tossed in six points.

Amaya Lathrop led Newaygo with seven points while Barbara Toth chipped in six points.

Whitehall (9-6, 3-5) will travel to Manistee on Thursday.

Newaygo (4-11, 2-5) will travel to Holton on Tuesday evening.
