WHITEHALL — Shelby’s girls basketball team stayed close the entire game, but couldn’t get over the hump in dropping a 40-35 non-conference loss to Whitehall on the road Thursday night.

After finishing in a 4-4 tie at the end of one, the Tigers were outscored, 15-7 in the second and entered the halftime break with a 19-11 deficit.
 
Shelby couldn’t gain any ground on the Vikings in the third quarter and was outscored, 12-11 and headed for the fourth quarter trailing 31-22. The Tigers finished the game wtih a 12-9 run but it fell short.
 
Molli Schultz led the Tigers with 14 points and Kendall Zaverl contributed 12. Biloxi Lee hauled down 11 rebounds, Aubrey Klotz and Lee each had two assists and Schultz picked off three steals.
 
The Tigers fell to 6-6 overall and are 4-2 in the West Michigan Conference Rivers Division. Shelby returns to conference action next Tuesday at Hart.

Whitehall won its second straight game to improve to 6-5 overall. The Vikings are 2-4 in the West Michigan Conference Lakes Division and are scheduled to host North Muskegon in conference action Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
