FRUITPORT — The Fruitport Calvary Christian Eagles celebrated homecoming in grand fashion on Friday night with a 72-55 victory over Wellspring Prep.

Bradley Richards poured in 29 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Calvary Christian (9-5, 2-2).

The host Eagles fell behind early, but used a 24-0 run to take a 38-19 lead into halftime.

Calvary got a bit lethargic in the third quarter and that allowed Wellspring to cut the deficit to 10 points. However, a Quinn Swanson steal and a thunderous slam dunk by Richards returned the momentum to the Eagles’ corner.

“We are proud of our boys for their dominant second quarter and for how they finished the game,” said Calvary coach Brad Richards.  “We are struggling inexplicably with consistency from quarter to quarter, but our guys are showing a lot of heart.  I know they’re really looking forward to next week.”

Next week includes two battles with area private schools. On Tuesday, the Eagles host Muskegon Catholic. On Friday, Calvary travels to Western Michigan Christian.

Besides Richards, the Eagles had three other players score in double figures. Sam Zelenka scored a career-high 19 points, Swanson had 11 points and eight rebounds and Gabe VanBaale had 10 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Wellspring Prep was led by Zeekeal Jackson with 19 points and Omar Mussa with 12 points.

Calvary Christian will host Muskegon Catholic Central next Tuesday.
