ONEKAMA — Bouncing back after a loss to Whitehall in its last game, the Manistee boys’ basketball team earned a rugged 67-51 non-conference win over Onekama on Wednesday.

It was the Chippewas third win in their last four games, and one of their their best offensive performances of the season.

“We did some good things tonight, (scoring) 21 points in the first quarter with five 3-pointers, and shot the ball well,” said Manistee coach Zach Bialik. “Onekama likes to sit in that 2-3 (zone) and they stay in it a lot of the time. We knew what we had to do, and we knew we were going to get a lot of open opportunities. We just had to put some of the shots in.”

Manistee used its hot start to build a four-point edge, 36-32, at the half. Onekama stayed close the entire game. The Chippewas took a narrow 44-40 edge into the fourth quarter.

But the Chippewas had another big quarter in the fourth, outscoring the Portagers, 23-11, to keep the Portagers from mounting a comeback.

Austen Halcome fired in 24 points to lead the Chippewas. He was followed by Kaden Kott with 11 and Jacob Scharp contributed six points.

Manistee (4-14) is on the road again next Tuesday night for a non-conference game in Holton.
