SCOTTVILLE–The Mason County Central Spartan wrestling team is sending three of their grapplers to the MHSAA Individual Finals next weekend.

The individual finals will be contested March 3-4 at Ford Field in Detroit.

On the girls’ side, Nyvaeh Wendt, a sophomore, qualified at 110 pounds after taking second place at the regional tournament in Grayling last weekend. She defeated Jocelyn Saucedo of South Haven, 8-5, in the semifinal round. In the finals, she was defeated by Montague’s Savannah Winkleblack.

“Nyvaeh wrestled great,” said Spartan coach Kendel Trim. “She looked great on her feet and rode tough on top. She had a good battle in the finals with Savannah. They have gone back and forth this year. I am guessing that they might meet up again at the finals with the talent they both have.”

Wendt will take a 27-17 record into the state finals.

The Spartan boys’ team will be represented by sophomore Hunter Sanford and junior Zane McCabe. Sanford wrestles at 113 pounds and McCabe is at 126.

Sanford (46-8) defeated Landon Terrell of Beaverton, 8-2 in his last match and finished third. In a previous matchup, Terrell had defeated Sanford.

McCabe (49-4) also finished in third place after defeating Laiken Reeves of Standish Sterling. McCabe won by major decision, 12-0.

“We wrestled really well today and the most important thing is to qualify,” said Trim. “We accomplished that and now it is time to fine tune as much as possible in preparing for the last tournament of the season. You always want to be at your best when you get to the finals.”

Sophomore Colter Kirchner also competed but did not qualify. Kirschner (144 pounds) finished with a 37-14 record.

“Colter had a good season and making it here will be a great experience for the future,” Trim said.
