PENTWATER — Pentwater knew coming into Thursday night’s West Michigan D League contest that stopping Mesick ace Kayla McCoy was going to be difficult.

But, as is frequently the case, all the best laid plans went for naught as McCoy scored early and often.

The Falcons simply didn’t have an answer.

McCoy burned the Falcons for 28 points, including four 3-pointers, and the visiting Bulldogs (8-11, 7-8 WMD) notched a 51-31 girls basketball victory.

“We just could not find the bottom of the net and each empty possession made those defensive legs a bit more heavy, and Mesick a bit more motivated,” said Pentwater coach Joe Gorton. “If we could have gotten some early ones to drop, perhaps we would have been able to stay within reach.”

The Falcons were only outscored 13-7 in the first quarter, but then were outscored 17-2 in the second and went into the half with a 30-9 deficit.

Pentwater never recovered and headed into the fourth period in a 40-20 hole.

Jocelyn Richison led the Falcons with 13 points. She was followed by Audrey Kieda with six points and Aubrie Adams added five. Mackenna Hasil had a strong game on the boards with nine rebounds.

Pentwater (7-13, 5-11 WMD) hosts Hesperia in a non-conference game next Tuesday.
