MUSKEGON — The Muskegon Catholic Crusaders had late-game opportunities to take the lead, but fell just short, 53-49, on Friday night.

“We had several chances to take the lead with under 3 minutes left in the game and couldn’t capitalize,” MCC coach Rob Recknagel said.

The Crusaders got off to a strong start and led 19-12 after one quarter, but then came the second quarter in which MCC turned the ball over 12 times and fell behind 31-24 at the half.

“We simply need to make more smart plays to win basketball games,” Recknagel said.

MCC outscored Wellspring 25-22 in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough.

Braden Gustin led the Crusaders with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Bryan Convertini had nine points and five assists. Owen Lyonnais had seven points and played a strong game after Chase Willer left the game with an injury.
