GRAYLING — The Muskegon Community College men’s basketball team faced a must-win situation on Saturday in order to stay alive in the hunt for a playoff berth.

Unfortunately for the Jayhawks, the host Kirtland Community College Firebirds held off the Jayhawks for an 84-79 victory.

Both teams had explosive scoring with MCC being led by Vern Nash III with 39 points. Kirtland countered with Greg Wilson, who poured in 38 points. The first half was a 1-on-1 battle between the two that featured Wilson with 22 points and Nash with 21.

MCC took an eight-point lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, but Kirtland battled back to take a 40-39 lead at the half.

Nash continued his offensive mastery, with help from Jarvin Graham, who returned to the lineup for the first time since being injured. Graham came off the bench and scored 19 points. Jadakiss Lewis chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Jayhawks (9-17, 3-9) will host North Central College on Tuesday night.
