ALPENA–The Newaygo County Connection sparked the Muskegon Community College Lady Jayhawks to a 70-51 victory over Alpena Community College on Saturday.

Emmerson Goodin and Kayla Fisk, from Newaygo High School and Calla Miller from Fremont came through in a big way in the victory.

“We played well in spurts,” said Jayhawks coach Jason Cooper. “The Newaygo connection with Kayla and Emmy really came through for us today.”

Goodin finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Fisk tossed in 10 points, grabbed four rebounds, had steals and dished out two assists. Miller led the Jayhawks scoring attack with a team high 18 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Also in double digits for MCC was Karleigh Jeffries with 11 points. Jeffries hauled down seven rebounds. Kendall Zoulek contributed nine points and four rebounds.

The Jayhawks offense got off to a quick start as they raced out to a 29-19 lead after the first quarter. MCC held a 40-28 halftime lead.

Alpena Community College cut the Jayhawks lead down to seven, 48-43 by the end of the third period by outscoring MCC 13-8 in the quarter.

The Jayhawks kicked their offense back into high gear during the final 10 minutes and outscored the Lumberjacks 22-10 to secure the victory.

The Lady Jayhawks (15-7, 6-3) travel to Grand Rapids Community College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
