NORTH MUSKEGON — North Muskegon turned in a solid effort on Tuesday night in a 34-30 setback to Holland Black River.

Black River canned its free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

“It was a hard-fought game and credit goes to Black River for making their free throws at the end of the game,” NM coach Sarah Knuth said. “We had good effort, but poor shooting with their defense were definite factors in our ability to put the ball in the basket on close shots.”

North Muskegon trailed 13-9 after one half. Both teams scored 21 second-half points.

Grace Philpot led North Muskegon (4-11, 3-5) with 15 points. Fran Vinson had seven rebounds and five steals. Georgia Skujins had six rebounds.

Olivia Hayes, a force inside, led Black River with 14 points.

“It was a disappointing loss, but we need to learn from it and regroup to be ready for Shelby on Thursday,” Knuth said. “It’s really nice to play so many home games as the season winds down.”

North Muskegon will host Shelby on Thursday.
