Big Rapids — An early nine-point deficit was too much for Pentwater girls basketball to climb back in its 42-33 loss to Big Rapids Crossroads Academy.

The Falcons struggled in the first half of the West Michigan D League matchup, trailing 11-4 at the end of the first quarter. Big Rapids had a 9-7 edge in the second, leaving the Falcons looking at a 20-11 halftime deficit.

Pentwater was outscored 12-8 in the third quarter but held a 14-10 edge in the fourth.

“We played much, much better this time around against the Cougars,” said Pentwater head coach Joe Gorton whose team lost Crossroads 49-28 earlier this season. “Our defense was solid all night long, really flustering them and taking them out of their rhythm.

“I really thought we met most of our goals tonight. There were a few plays that I wish we could have back, and a few plays offensively that I wish we could have back.”

Freshman Aubrie Adams knocked down three 3-point shots and scored 11 points to lead the Falcons. Jocelyn Richison contributed six points and Ava Johnson five.

The Cougars were led by Amelia Johnson with a game-high 13 points and Jackie Cole added 10.

Pentwater (6-11, 5-9) is next scheduled to host Manistee Catholic Central (14-3, 10-2) Thursday night.
