MONTAGUE — Montague held off a scrappy Manistee boys basketball team for a tight 38-36 West Michigan Conference Lakes Division win Tuesday night in Montague.

 
The Wildcats trailed the Chippewas by one point, 12-11 at the end of the first quarter. But the Wildcats came back in the second with a stingy defense that gave up just four points while scoring 12 themselves and entered the half with a 23-16 lead.
 
Montague kept the defensive pressure on in the second half, limiting the Chippewas to just seven points, and scored 12 to further extend its lead to 12 points, 35-23 and then held on at the end as Manistee outscored the Wildcats, 13-3 in the final eight minutes.
 
Isiah Atchison led Montague with a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Kellan Francis added 10.
 
Rodney Brassfield hauled down 10 rebounds and had two assists and two steals.
 
The Chippewas were led in scoring by Mason Gunnett, who knocked down three 3-point shots and finished with 11 points, Jacon Scharp had a 3-pointer and scored nine points.
 
The Wildcats (12-9, 6-5 WMC Lakes) are back in action Thursday night with a conference game at Oakridge.
 
Manistee (5-16, 1-10 WMC Lakes) has its final home game scheduled for Thursday night against Fremont in the conference.
