CUSTER — After a slow start, the Pentwater boys’ basketball team exploded in the second quarter and raced to a 61-33 victory Tuesday over Mason County Eastern.

The West Michigan D League game was played in Custer.

The Falcons missed several shots in the first quarter and trailed the Cardinals, 15-8, by the horn. But they outscored the Cardinals, 18-5, in the second quarter and climbed into a 26-20 halftime advantage.
 
Trey Johnson hit two big shots out of the gate in the second half and the Falcons were rolling.
 
Mikey Carlson and Will Werkema-Grondsma worked the inside game and Pentwater outscored Eastern, 17-6 in the third quarter and mounted a 43-26 lead.
 
Eight Falcons scored at least one point in the fourth quarter, with James Davis leading the charge with five free throws.
 
Werkema-Grondsma paced the Falcons with a double-double of 12 points and 22 rebounds. He also added two assists and two blocked shots.
 
Carlson led the scoring with 15 points. He also had nine rebounds and dished out two assists. Johnson tossed in 14 points.
 
Eastern was led by Clay Shoup with a game-high 18 points and Zach Howe added seven.
 
Pentwater (10-11, 10-7 WMD) travels to Baldwin on Thursday to end the regular season.
 
Mason County Eastern (6-14, 5-11 WMD) will travel to Mesick on Friday.
