COMSTOCK PARK–Led by Oakley Obenauf’s game-high 25 points, the Grant Tigers won a hard-fought Division 2 quarterfinal district contest over the Newaygo Lions on Monday evening, 64-48.

The game was played at Comstock Park High School.

Grant had a balanced scoring attack. Joining Obenauf in double digits were Austin Whitney and Zak Barnhart with 10 points apiece. Zaiden Phillips tossed in nine points. The Packers nailed six shots from beyond the arc and went 12-of-17 from the free-throw line.

Grant jumped out to a slim two-point lead after the first quarter, 13-11. Barnhart scored seven points and Obenauf contributed six to account for all of the Tigers’ points. Caris Nelson kept the Lions close by scoring six points in the quarter.

Grant extended its lead in the second stanza as they outscored Newaygo 17-6 to take a 30-17 lead at the half. Obenauf tossed in 7 points in the period for Grant while Whitney scored five points.

Newaygo chipped away at the Grant lead in the third quarter outscoring the Tigers 19-15. Dyllan Bazzett scored six points in the period for the Lion. Grant held a 45-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Obenauf scored 10 points in the final eight minutes for Grant and the Tigers racked up a 19-12 scoring advantage to secure the win.

Nelson led Newaygo offense 16 points while Bazzett tossed in 10 points. Logan Klomp and Bryce Decker each contributed six points.

The Lions only connected on two shots from beyond the arc and went 8-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Newaygo finishes the season with a 13-10 record.

Grant (12-10) will now move on to take on Newaygo County rival Fremont Packers (11-11) in a semifinal district battle at 7 p.m. Wednesday. On the other side of the bracket, Grand Rapids West Catholic (4-19) will take on Sparta (14-8) at 5:30 p.m.
