WALKERVILLE — Talk about your bad nights.

Mason County Eastern’s girls basketball team went through a nightmare in Wednesday night’s Division 4 girls basketball district semifinal game at Walkerville against Manistee Catholic Central.

Kennedy Tyler banged home a 3-point shot less than two minutes into the game, and then the Cardinals went scoreless and lost 42-3.

Maria Gomez Jimenez pulled down six rebounds for the Cardinals. Eastern had 24 rebounds for the game, while the Sabers had 31. Kaden Robinson picked off three steals for MCE. The Cardinals also committed 28 turnovers.

Deanna Codman and Kaitlyn Mickevich were credited with playing good games by Eastern coach Jake Smith.

“It’s a disappointing way to end the season,” Smith said. “We are a better team than what we showed. Catholic brought its quality game tonight.”

Kaylyn Johnson scored 14 points for the Sabers, nine of them coming in the first quarter, and Ashley VanAlest buried two 3-pointers and finished with 10.

Eastern ended the season with an 11-13 record.

The Sabers improved to 18-5 and will play for the district championship Friday night against Northern Michigan Christian.
