COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA –A pair of former Whitehall wrestlers contributed to a 31st place finish for the Muskegon Community College Jayhawk wrestlers.
The NJCAA national wrestling tournament drew 52 teams.
Kayleb Venema went 3-2 and fell just one match short of All-American honors. Venema earned bonus points in each of his three wins.
Max Brown scored a fall in the consolation round to add to the overall team score.
As a team, the Jayhawks were slow to start, but battled to make up lost ground from the back of the pack.
“We had a tough first round with every wrestler losing their first-round match,” said Coach Mark Brunger. “To be able to bounce back from that and score 11 team points with our back against the wall was very impressive.”
The Jayhawks didn’t finish where they had hoped, but everyone chipped in to close out the season.
“We went out hoping for a top 20 finish and some of our guys earning All-American honors,” Brunger said. “While falling just short of our goals, I am extremely proud of these guys.”
