MONTAGUE — Pressure defense by the Montague Wildcats produced a Division 3 district victory on Wednesday night.
A full-court pressure defense allowed the Wildcats to jump out to an early lead and they carried that to a 34-22 victory. Montague will face Whitehall, a 33-32 winner over Grant, in the title game at 7 p.m. Friday.
“Montague’s pressure defense was the difference in the game,” Fremont coach Wes Zerlaut said. “Our girls played with great energy and effort, but we struggled to maintain control of the ball. Even when we effectively broke the press, or shots just looked rushed.”
Montague (16-7) led 14-5 after the first quarter and 18-12 at the half. Montague increased its lead to 29-16 after three quarters.
Emma Peterson led Montague with 15 points.
Fremont, which was plagued by 27 turnovers, was led by Olivia Hansen and Jessica Bennett with seven points each.
Fremont finished the season 9-15.
