GRAND RAPIDS –The Reeths-Puffer girls soccer team gave the 12th-ranked East Grand Rapids a run for their money to kick off the season on Wednesday evening.

The Rockets fell short, 3-2.

The game opened with a battle that ended in a 1-all tie at the half. Reeths-Puffer’s first-half goal was scored by Sophia Hekkema.

East Grand Rapids came out quickly after the break and scored two goals within the first nine minutes.

The Rockets scored against when Billie Tryska set up a header goal for Brooke Bradley with three minutes left to play.

“We generated four other quality scoring chances but missed a breakaway, a penalty kick and we hit the crossbar twice,” said Rocket coach Kody Harrell. “This was a game we 100 percent could have won and it’s really exciting to see our team playing such a confident brand of soccer so early in the season.”

Reeths-Puffer’s home opener is Friday against North Muskegon.
