MANISTEE — Three different players scored for the Manistee girls soccer team in a 3-0 shutout of visiting Shelby in a West Michigan Conference game Monday.

Kate Somsel got the Chippewas on the board early and the defense and keeper Piper Eskridge did the rest in keeping the Tigers from scoring.

“Our defense just executed the game really well,” said Manistee coach Kathy Smith. “We had a few things that we talked about, and they just really played well as a unit, turning back wave after wave of attacks. The midfielders played with a lot of composure tonight. They were finding good angles and good passes.”

The Chippewas received a free kick from 20 yards out which Somsel converted into a goal off a well-placed shot.

Manistee netted a pair of goals in the second half. Jayna Edmondson sent a pass to Emily Raebler, whose shot from just outside the box zipped past the keeper.

Edmondson got in on the act for the Chippewas when she scored on a through ball from Raeber.

The Chippewas (5-1-0, 2-1 WMC) play another conference game at Ludington on Wednesday.

Shelby (4-5-0, 1-2 WMC) hosts Fremont Wednesday in a conference game.
