ALLENDALE — In a pair of well played games from both teams, the Spring Lake Lakers edged the host Allendale Falcons for a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday.

The Lakers won the first game 3-0 and the nightcap, 2-0.

First, these were two outstanding high school baseball games today,” said Spring Lake coach Bill Core. “Both games entered the seventh inning scoreless.”

Spring Lake scratched out three runs in the top of the seventh in the first game and two runs in the top of the seventh in the nightcap.

“The real story was our pitching was phenomenal,” Core said. “Zane Stahl and Gerrit Lyyski combined to throw 13 shutout innings with 21 strikeouts and allowing three hits.”

In the opener, back-to-back singles by Gerrit Lyyski and Owen Smies was followed by a double by Derrick Paggeot that plated the first run. Smies scored on a balk and Paggeot scored on a fielder’s choice to account for the final two runs. Stahl had nine strikeouts and allowed two hits.

The winning runs were scored in the eighth inning of the nightcap.

With one on and one out, Smies was nicked by a pitch then Paggeot walked to load the bases. One out later, Gabe May lined a two-run single to score the only two runs of the game. May also picked up the victory on the mound in relief of Lyyski, who pitched six scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts.

Spring Lake (6-1, 4-1) hosts Allendale in a single game at 4:15 p.m. Thursday. Allendale dropped to 3-3, 3-2.
