LUDINGTON — Ludington and Montague split a West Michigan Conference doubleheader Tuesday, with the Wildcats winning the opener, 10-5, and the Orioles taking the nightcap, 7-1.

The Lakes Division games were played in Ludington.

“After one of the more frustrating starts in recent memory, we finally feel like we played good baseball today,” said Orioles coach Evan Kroeze. “Though there are still aspects we need to keep working on, we feel much better moving forward.”

Game 2 belonged to Jonny Weinert.

“As a senior and a captain, he put the team on his back and threw the best game of his career and led us offensively,” said Kroeze. “We think this is a game we can build on.”

Weinert threw seven innings and scattered five hits while striking out 10. He did not allow an earned run.

He also was the team’s leading hitter, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Cole Johnson was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored.

In the opener, Nathan Dillehay was on the hill for the Orioles. He went five innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits and struck out six.

Evan McCarthy led the Orioles two hits and two runs while Matthew Westhouse had one hit and scored a run.

The Orioles are 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Ludington is scheduled to travel to Cadillac for a non-conference doubleheader on Friday.
