KENT CITY — The Kent City Eagles and Big Rapids Cardinals hooked up for an instant classic softball game on Wednesday.

But, that was Game 1 and they played a doubleheader. In the opener, the Cardinals scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning and defeated the Eagles 7-1. In the second game, Big Rapids won, 14-1.

In the opener, it was a pitcher’s duel between Kent City’s Jacee Hoffman and Big Rapids’ Rylie Haist. The teams remained scoreless through eight innings before the Cardinals struck for seven runs. Kent City scored one run in the bottom of the ninth.

Haist, a Ferris State commit, pitched nine innings and allowed five hits and struck out 16. Hoffman threw 171 pitches and alllowed eight hits, six earned runs and struck out 12.

Hannah Stellini had two hits and the only RBI for Kent City.

In the second game, Big Rapids scored seven runs in the second inning and routed the Eagles.

Lexie Bowers had two of the three hits for Kent City.
