HOLLAND – The Ludington girls tennis team earned a spot at the state tournament with a second-place finish in the regional tournament on Friday.

The Orioles finished with 21 points, eight points behind regional champion Holland Christian, which finished with 29. Hudsonville Unity Christian was third (16), followed by Whitehall (10), Fruitport (8), Sparta (6), Coopersville (4), Spring Lake (2) and Fremont (0).

Fruitport’s Grace Sweet captured a regional title at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hannah Glanville from Ludington.

Ludington’s Jennah Skiba won the title at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Holland Christian’s Monika Diaz.

Ludington’s Claire Shoup finished second at No. 4 singles. Ludington’s No 2 doubles team of Emilie Phillips and Sarah Gibson finished second. Also, the Orioles’ No, 4 doubles team of Katie Shank and Makennah Malkowski finished in second.

“I was really proud and happy for the girls,” said Ludington coach Larry Brown. “They have put a lot of work in the season and the off-season to get where they are today.

“Overall, it was a team effort and a great outcome for us,” said Brown.

The state tournament will be June 2-3 at the University of Michigan and Dexter High School.
