CUSTER — Mason County Eastern and Shelby split a softball doubleheader on Monday.

Mason County Eastern won the opener, 21-20, and lost the nightcap, 8-6.

MCE’s Miley Kessel took the pitcher’s circle in the first game and worked six full innings, allowing 10 hits and walking 14 with notching eight strikeouts.

Eastern pounded out 14 hits, with Deanna Codman leading the way with a home run and a single with four RBI. Kennady Tyler (one RBI), Ashlynn Matlock (two RBI), Avery Crawford and Kessel had two hits apiece.

Lillian Morley-Miller had a base hit and two RBI.

The second game was tied 6-6 in the bottom of the second inning when the Tigers pushed across two runs for the win.

Kessel pitched for the Cardinals and in two innings she walked six, allowed five hits and struck out two.

Eastern opens district tournament play Friday in Hesperia against the Panthers starting at 4:15 p.m.

Shelby still has one more regular season game left next Tuesday at home against Morley Stanwood.
