SHELBY — In the quarterfinals of the district tournament Wednesday night at home the Shelby girls soccer team turned back Lakeview 4-1 and advanced to the second round.
 
Kendal Zaverl opened the scoring for the Tigers on a deflection off a Lakeview defender with four minutes left in the first half. Shelby took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
 
The Tigers scored again 10 minutes into the second half when America Cruz knocked in a shot past the keeper to boost the lead to 2-0.
 
Kylie Brown increased the Shelby lead to 3-0 with a goal from an assist by Hannah Frees with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
 
Lakeview tallied its lone goal on a direct free kick outside of the box one minute later, but Cruz scored her second goal of the game with Alyse Erickson providing the helper with four minutes left.
 
The Tigers improved to 10-9-1 and will play in the semifinals of the district in Brethren next Tuesday against the winner of the Brethren-Buckley game to be played later this week.
