GRAND RAPIDS — The North Muskegon girls’ tennis team qualified for the Division 4 state tournament on Saturday with a strong showing in the regional meet.

All eight of North Muskegon’s flights won at least one match and contributed to the team score of 19, which was one more point than needed to qualify for the finals. North Muskegon finished in a second-place tie with host Grand Rapids Northpointe and four points behind regional champion Grand Rapids Catholic Central.

Muskegon Catholic and Grant both finished with four points. Western Michigan Christian had two points.

North Muskegon’s Fia Lindsey was the top seed in her bracket at No. 2 singles. She won all of her matches, including a hard fought three-set championship match. In that title match, Lindsey outlasted Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s Amelia Verbrugge 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2.

Allie Sanocki fell behind early in her first match and battled back to advance to the championship match. She finished runner-up at No. 4 singles. In the final match, she fell to Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s Isabel Krueger, 6-2, 6-0.

“I’m so proud of these girls and the fight they showed today to get the job done and do what they needed to keep our season alive,” North Muskegon coach Cody Liverance said.

Grant’s No. 1 doubles team of Ana Ovalle and Jocee Pleune finished second.

The state finals are set for June 1-3 at Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University.
