WHITEHALL — The Whitehall Vikings ran away with the boys’ championship in the West Michigan Conference league track meet on Friday.

The Vikings amassed 222 points to outdistance runner-up Ludington, which had 87 and third-place Fremont with 84. Montague finished fourth with 71 points, followed by Manistee with 30, Oakridge with 20 and Orchard View with 12.

Whitehall captured first place in 12 of the 17 events.

Fremont had a few hiccups along the way, but Coach Cliff Somers came out of the meeting feeling pretty good about his team.

“We were really happy with the way the boys stepped up at a championship meet, focusing on controlling their own performance,” Somers said. “Daniel Romero and Sean Pettis were our standout athletes; each earning a conference championship in two events.”
