CEDAR SPRINGS — The top-ranked Spring Lake Lakers turned in a dominating performance on Tuesday night in the Division 2 regional soccer game. However, there was an issue of putting the ball in the back of the net.

In the end, Ada Halvorsen scored on a penalty kick in the final six minutes of regulation and lifted the Lakers to a 2-1 victory over Bay City Western.

The ball just didn’t want to go into the net for the Lakers. Close calls and shots off the post had to push the Laker faithful to the edge of their seats.

Spring Lake (17-2-2) will face No. 4 East Grand Rapids at 6 p.m. Thursday with a regional crown at stake.

In the first half, the Lakers gained a 1-0 lead when Ella Andree scored with assistance from Clara Saunders. That lead held until Bay City Western scored on a penalty kick by Brooke Swartz with 13 minutes remaining in the game.

But Halvorsen, thanks to some hard work in the offensive zone, earned herself a penalty kick and buried it for the game-winning goal.
