NEWAYGO – The Newaygo girls basketball team fell short to Central Montcalm, 40-37, in the first round of the CSAA tournament on Tuesday evening.

“Tough loss tonight,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “It felt like we really played well in the first half and should have been up more, but we let them hang around.”

The Lions led 16-8 after the first two quarters, but got outscored 25-11 in the third quarter to put them behind. They missed 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.

“The free throw stripe came back to haunt us again too,” Thomasma said. “We shot 8-of-27 and it’s difficult to beat a quality team like Central Montcalm shooting like that.”

Naomi Schillman led the Lions with 11 points. Ruby Hughes chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds.

Newaygo (11-10, 4-7) will close the conference tournament against Lakeview on Friday at home.
