BYRON CENTER – The Mona Shores girls’ lacrosse team closed out regular-season play with a 19-9 win over Byron Center on Thursday evening.
The Sailors started slowly, but eventually found their groove.
“We’re down two starting attackers so it has to be the ‘next up’ mentality,” said Mona Shores coach Chip Vasquez. “We’ve called up younger players and have thrown them right in there. As the game went on, I thought we started to gel a little bit.”
Emma Reelman led with seven goals and two ground balls, while Reese Smith helped carry the weight with six goals, six ground balls and six draw controls.
Morgan Osterhart chipped in a score, seven ground balls and six draw controls. Jordyn Briseno added a goal, an assist, two ground balls and a forced turnover. Ashlyn Locke and Brooklyn Briseno had a goal apiece.
Also, Madelyn Warren threw in an assist.
“All of our freshmen really stepped up tonight and getting four goals from them was huge,” said Vasquez. “Defensively they played well. They are a confident bunch and that’s what you need, confidence and to play with no fear.”
Mona Shores (7-10-1 overall) will travel to Kalamazoo Central on Friday, May 17 for the first round of regional tournament action.
