HOLLAND – The Grand Haven volleyball team came away with a win after going five sets against Holland West Ottawa in an OK-Red match on Thursday.

The Bucs edged out West Ottawa, 23-25, 25-8, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-13.

“We dominated the second set playing some of our best volleyball of the season,” said Grand Haven coach Aaron Smaka. “In the fourth set, we were down 2-1 and down 8-18, but stormed back to win. The fifth set was a battle and we were fortunate to come out on top.”

Mallory Woiteshek led the Bucs with 28 kills and 16 digs. Nadia Priedits had 11 kills and 10 digs. Bria Hogeboom was crucial to the Bucs’ fourth-set comeback and finished the night with six aces and 28 assists.

“We have worked hard this past week on improving our out-of-system play, setting the ball tighter to the net and playing more consistently, making fewer mistakes,” said Smaka. “We showed some great improvement, and at the same time, showed we still have a lot of room to grow.”

Grand Haven will travel to Northville on Saturday for the East vs. West Challenge.
