CALEDONIA – The Grand Haven volleyball team went 1-2 in a high-level quad match on Thursday.
The Bucs fell to Forest Hills Northern (9-25, 14-25) and Caledonia (23-25, 14-25), but bounced back to beat Grand Rapids Catholic Central (25-18, 25-16).
Forest Hills Northern is ranked No. 3 in Division 1, while Grand Haven and Caledonia earned honorable mentions in the latest MIVCA poll.
“The first two matches were rough,” said Grand Haven coach Aaron Smaka. “We did not have great focus and did not play well, but I think we learned some valuable lessons as we get ready for conference play next week.”
Mallory Woiteshek had 18 kills and 18 digs. Allie Musial added 11 kills and four blocks, while Ellery Berndt added six kills and seven blocks. Bria Hogeboom and Sara Weber had 23 and 16 assists, respectively. Ashley Fumarolo contributed 14 digs on defense.
“I’m proud of our team for embracing the struggle,” said Smaka. “We would have rather played well all night, but we ended the night playing well.”
Grand Haven hosts the End of Summer Bash on Saturday.
