MUSKEGON — Ludington set the tone early against Oakridge on Friday night and finished with a stunning 31-15 victory over the host Eagles.
But, it wasn’t just the Orioles offense that shined.
The defense held up its end as well, with Jonah Peterson picking off two Eagles passes to cut short a couple potential scoring drives.
Oakridge did not have an answer for Ludington running back Mike Flanery. Starting the season at a different position, Flanery wowed the coaching staff by rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries for an 8.1 average per rush.
The Orioles kept the ball primarily on the ground.
Ludington quarterback Cam Gunsell carried the bal 26 times for 103 yards and got into the end zone twice.
But, he did put the ball in the air, connecting on 6-of-9 passes for 109 yards, one for a touchdown.
Taj Williams was the leading receiver with three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.
“It just feels good, because in this league, it’s Whitehall, Oakridge, Montague, and I kind of feel like we stuck our foot in the door a little bit as part of the conversation,” said Ludington coach Charlie Gunsell. “So I’m just super proud of, and I can’t stress it enough, I’m super proud about how hard our kids played and how important it was for them.”
Ludington improved to 3-1 overall on the season and is 2-0 in the conference. The Orioles host Montague next Friday.
Oakridge dropped to 2-2 overall and in the conference. The Eagles host Fremont next week.
Way to go O’s!
