GAYLORD – The Fruitport boys soccer team’s journey down the tournament trail continued on Tuesday night with a 4-2 victory over Marquette in the Division 2 regional semifinal game.
The action was back and forth through the first 20 minutes of play before Marquette opened the scoring.
After that goal, the Trojans turned it on as they fired off three unanswered goals from Isaac VanderMolen, Nathaniel Cribley Cotto and Jyles Smith to roll into halftime with a 3-1 lead. Ryder Merkins, Davis Johnson and Hudson Hazekamp each tallied an assist.
Nobody scored again until the latter stages when the Sentinels cut the deficit to one goal.
However, the Trojans’ Sam Krueger pushed the lead back to two with a goal from 40 yards out.
The backline of Jayden Booker, Braxton Ward, Krueger, Cotto and Isaiah Packard held strong to limit Marquette’s opportunities to seal the victory.
Goalkeeper Logan Werschem made four saves as the Trojans outshot Marquette, 10-4.
Top-ranked Fruitport (20-0-1) will travel to Cedar Springs on Saturday for a regional final showdown with Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern.
