MT. PLEASANT – Ludington’s boys soccer team saw its season come to an end Wednesday night with a 3-0 loss to Bay City John Glenn in the Division 2 district final at Mt. Pleasant.

But, the score doesn’t indicate how close the game actually was.

John Glenn took a 1-0 lead at halftime.

“Really, I felt the first half was even, maybe even we outplayed them,” said Ludington coach Kris Anderson. “They just happened to score on one real good chance. It was a tough angle. Their kid had a little open space, but he wasn’t inside the box, he was kind of in a corner. He took the shot and kind of chipped it up toward Gabe (Gamez, the Oriole goalkeeper) towards the opposite side of the goal.”

Gamez just missed getting his hands on the ball.

Anderson felt the Orioles maintained possession and carried the play through the first 15 or 20 minutes of the game, and created some opportunities, but just didn’t put one in.

“I knew going in this game had to be low scoring and close,” Anderson said. “I was actually thinking it could be one of those types of nights when we go to overtime and maybe a shootout. We played really well defensively.”

John Glenn got a corner kick midway through the second half, and they scored off a rebound to make it 2-0.

“Now, the hill starts getting a little bit bigger,” Anderson said. “Now the clock is also starting to be a little bit of a factor. There might not be enough time to get a second one.”

A mistake in the back end cost the Orioles and led to them trailing by three goals when Gamez was waiting on a ball to come into the box and before it came into the box and he could pick it up, a Bobcat stepped in, knocked it around and he had a wide open net to shoot into.

“They’re a good team, ranked eighth in the state, and we just came up short, missing on a couple opportunities,” Anderson added.

Ludington finished the season 14-4-5 overall and made the district final a second straight year.
