NORTON SHORES – The Kent City volleyball team bounced back after losing two sets to secure a Division 3 district semifinal victory against North Muskegon.
The Eagles outlasted the Norse, 16-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-13, on Wednesday evening.
“I’m proud of the team for continuing to battle and make adjustments as the match went on,” said Kent City coach Vandy Krueger. “We had some great defensive plays that kept us in it.”
The Eagles’ Maddy Mitchell led with 17 kills and three blocks, while Kenzy Freeland added 13 kills, one ace and two blocks. Laynee Hoffman had 12 kills, one block and 31 digs. Alyssa Miller scored three aces and made a block.
Cailynn Hartzell contributed 49 assists on offense and 26 digs on defense. Kaden Perkins chipped in 22 digs.
Olivia Peterson led the Norse with 16 kills, 55 assists, 19 digs and three blocks. Addie Falkowski contributed 16 kills and 29 digs, while Isabella Fornaro had 14 kills and three blocks. Delaney Young had 14 kills and Reegan Schwemin had nine kills and two blocks.
Jolie Fellows led the Norse defense with 30 digs. Caroline Lamiman and Emma Buchmiller threw in 27 and 22 digs, respectively.
“At the end of the day, I’m blessed with a broken heart,” said North Muskegon coach Kammi Eacker. “This team has been so fun to coach, and we’ve come so far. The growth in skill and as people has been off the charts, and that’s all I can ask for.”
Kent City (27-13-4) will face off with Western Michigan Christian on Thursday for the district championship.
North Muskegon finished the season 23-15 and co-West Michigan Conference-Rivers champions with Shelby.
