CEDAR RAPIDS – Rudy Berzkalns’ game-winning goal at the 11:55 mark of the third period propelled the Muskegon Lumberjacks to their second straight win.
The Jacks defeated the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 2-1 on Friday.
The Lumberjacks are now 6-3-3 on the season, good for 15 points and third place in the USHL’s Eastern Conference standings.
Muskegon will look to complete a weekend sweep over the RoughRiders on Saturday night before returning home next Friday to play the Omaha Lancers.
Berzkalns opened the scoring for Muskegon with his second goal of the season at the 3:52 mark of the first period.
Muskegon maintained its lead until the 17:54 mark of the second period. That’s when RoughRiders Thomas Vandenberg got the hosts on the board.
The contest was tied 1-1 heading into the third period with the RoughRiders outshooting Muskegon 16-13 through 40 minutes of play.
Berkalns broke the tie with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation with his sixth goal of the season. Davis Borozinskis and David Klee each had an assist for the Lumberjacks.
The RoughRiders outshot Muskegon 24-19. Lumberjack goaltender Stephen Peck earned the victory in net by stopping 23 of 24 shots.
