GRANT – Zaiden Phillips went off to help the Grant boys’ basketball team shake off some early jitters and top Belding 65-47 in the season opener on Wednesday.
Phillips put up 32 points in the game, with 21 of them coming in the second half.
“We talked about how to build a team culture when we first met back in June,” said first-year coach Dan George. “This was a team effort. I’m proud of my guys and coaches for sticking with the game plan.”
The Tigers were down 13-2 early in the game, but battled back to cut the deficit to one point and roll into halftime trailing 23-22. The last two quarters belonged to Grant as it took the lead and then some.
Grant (1-0) will host Howard City Tri County on Friday for the first CSAA-Red game of the season.
