MORLEY – The Newaygo girls basketball team outdid Morley-Stanwood, 52-47, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night.

The Lions took a 31-24 first half lead and led 41-30 after the third quarter. The Lions held off a late push by Morley Stanwood to secure the win.

Gabi Arney was the Lions’ leading scorer with 15 points, five steals and three rebounds. Naomi Schillman scored 12 points, while Kija Schultz chipped in 10 points, four steals and four rebounds. Ruby Hughes added eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

“I’m really proud of the girls tonight,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “We must continue to get better at taking care of the ball. If we can do that, we can be competitive.”

Newaygo (3-1, 1-0) will be at home on Friday against Grant for CSAA-Red play.
