SPARTA – The Newaygo girls’ basketball team bounced back from its loss in the season opener with a 52-24 rout over Sparta on Wednesday evening.

“We played much more controlled on both the defense and offense than we did on Monday,” Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma said. “I thought the girls came out with good spirit and energy and it showed.”

The Lions led 19-3 after the first quarter and 34-7 by halftime.

Ruby Hughes recorded 11 points and six rebounds, while Amaya Lathrop added 11 points and six steals. Kija Schultz tallied nine points, four steals, three rebounds and two blocks, while Lilly Holmes scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.

Newaygo (1-1) will face its first CSAA-Red opponent of the season as the Lions travel to Reed City on Friday.
