The Mona Shores hockey team had to rely on patience and a fury of last-minute goals to take down Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills on Wednesday night.
The Sailors scored three goals in the final three minutes to top the Knights 4-2 at Lakeshore Sports Centre.
Nathan Tilden tallied the game winner for Mona Shores on an assist from his brother, Brady Tilden, with just under two minutes to play in the contest. Brady Tilden scored an empty-net goal to seal the win for the Sailors.
Kenowa Hills looked as if it had the Sailors’ number as it led 1-0 after the first period.
Vaire VanderWalle broke the ice for Mona Shores’ first goal, tying the score at 1-all early in the second period on an assist from Cullen Conrad. Mona Shores had fallen behind 1-0 after the first period despite heavily outshooting the Knights.
The Knights took a 2-1 lead late in the second period and continued to hold Mona Shores at bay through the contest.
Captain Eli Habetler finally tied the score at 2-all for Mona Shores with just under three minutes left to play on an unassisted goal.
Braelin Hyrns posted the win in goal for Mona Shores which will next play on Friday when it hosts the Stan Konrad Hockey Showcase.
The 35th Annual event at Lakeshore Sports Centre will host 10 teams from around the state with the first game starting at 1 p.m. on Friday.
Grand Haven faces off with Canton at 2:30 p.m., Reeths-Puffer goes up against Birmingham at 4:45 p.m. and Mona Shores will face Midland at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, Reeths-Puffer faces off with FNV at 12:15 p.m., Grand Haven plays Midland at 4:45 and Mona Shores battles South Lyon at 7 p.m.
